Myth #2: Local Suppliers Will Deliver Glass Jars Faster By D Foreman Every day customers located west and south of us react negatively when they discover our operation is based in Connecticut. Their immediate thought is that distance will delay receipt of their orders. They assume, in some cases rightly, that regional or local distributors should be able to supply them with glass jars faster and more efficiently. Often we are asked for the names of another supplier near to them that can handle their business. However, I intend to dispel the myth of time in relation to distance.
Among glass jar and candle supply distributors, I’ve found that if average order processing time is factored into time in transit, then in reality glassware can be delivered from New England in the same time as a regional source, particularly if they are shipping across state lines and the order is not designated for pick up. The average processing time for most glass or candle supply distributors is forty eight hours for in-stock inventory. This adds at a minimum two days to the transit time for receiving an order. As a point of comparison, northeast distributors that guarantee same-day shipping before a specific cutoff time ensure that the delivery clock begins on the day of order. Subsequently, total time-in-transit will either be equal to or less than a regional supplier shipping
with slower processing times.

The below map bad spirit strates how significant processing times impact average delivery time for bulk orders shipping from a typical wholesale distributor in Dallas, TX and a same-day shipper in Connecticut:

The visual map clearly outlines a shorter or equal transit time to most destinations on the west coast, south and mid west despite that Dallas warehouses are located almost a thousand miles closer to the delivery locations shown on the map.
Pervasive and all too common, distributors will not stock adequate quantities of glass jars to support their customer’s needs. Worse, many jars are simply unavailable except on a drop ship basis or must be ordered well in advance – in some cases six week lead times are given. My advice to glass jar buyers is to audit the order processing times of their local or regional sources carefully to be certain that they are receiving the type of service they need. Make sure that they can provide a reliable delivery window from a national common carrier and that they will get your order out in a timely fashion. Otherwise, the inherent value of “local” evaporates and the best options are those the greatest distance away.
