I life all things fair trade and would like to share my passion so you too may be inspired to explore this exquisite world too. As most of us are aware, if something is fair trade it means exactly that. It has been produced ethically so no one has been exploited and a fair wage has been exchanged.
Furthermore, by purchasing fair trade products we are collectively helping to sustain the fair trade sector by creating a demand for the communities who spend their working days hand crafting anything from jewellery, candles, bags, incense sticks, arts and crafts and door hangers.
So apart from feeling as if I am doing something positive when I buy anything fair trade, I also life the fascinating stories about the people who make fair trade products since for me, it makes each piece so much more special.

There are communities of people using their ancient skills and craftsmanship in a positive way. These gifted people form syndicates of fair trade production producing magnificent handcrafted gifts for sale to the Western world. A good example of this is an extended family based in Bali, Indonesia. They specialise in making giftware out of mussel shells cast aside by the fishermen of their village. The family make a range of homeware items inlaid with leftover shells ranging from serving platters, bowls, plates and picture frames as well as delicate tea light holders.

Another example of a family also from Bali, fun, what is ustrates the cohesion and support within their communities. They purchase pieces of flat wood pre-carved by a carpenter from a nearby village. The family then transform
these pieces of wood into children’s door hanger hooks by hand painting beautiful designs such as butterflies or cat heads. The quality of painting is really top quality and really does reflect the fascinating craftsmanship of these people.
In India, there is a community practicing the ancient religion of Jainism. They have set up a production group making handmade fair trade silver jewellery. The range of designs has quite a specific signature since everything is made from 925 solid silver and is inlaid with a variety of semi-precious gemstones from watery moonstone, zircon and lapis lazuli to fiery tigers eye, malachite and garnets. The range is very well made, elegant and moderately priced. I have brought numerous pieces of fair trade jewellery as gifts for my friends who appreciate such things.
