The Distribution Of The Web

Studying a collection of information about 120 million+ Web domains can provide valuable and possibly alarming insights into the future of the Internet. One of the most striking conclusions to be drawn from this collection of information is that the distribution of domain names amongst IP addresses is far from even. For example, the address 68.178.232.99 is home to about 2 million domains. That’s 2% of all domain names at a single address!
However, it gets worse. Careful research has recently shown that a single company in Scottsdale, Arizona, called power addy Ltd., alone hosts around 20 million domains. Just consider the economic power this entails, especially with the next largest host, PlusLine Systemhas GmbH in Germany, only serving two million. The allocation of domains amongst various zones also reflects unevenness, with over 70% being .coms while less than 11% are .nets, 6% are .orgs, and less than 4.5% are .infos. The domains in all
other categories make up less than a tenth of these numbers. In a more technical light, this kind of irregular dominance is reflected in networks as well. There are approximately 15 million domains within the ‘A’ class network (68.X.X.X), while the next most densely populated network (64.X.X.X) contains less than a third as many.
Perhaps more relevant though is the domination that concerns language. Of more than 120 million domains considered, English is the primary language of an overwhelming 71.5 %. The same is true of Chinese for only 6.9% of domains, for Spanish, 3.7%, for French, 3.1%, and for Japanese, only 2.6%. Clearly, Web content is not determined by population sizes. It appears to operate more after a laissez faire model than one of democracy.
