Construction Trade Job Types By cardiff jobs Trade jobs that generally require NVQ or equivalent qualifications are Bricklaying, Construction and Installation, Electrical, Plumbing, and Carpentry, as well as many related vocations. As a consequence, to remain a competitive participant within the trade industry, it is advisable to have some NVQs to your name.
Bricklaying work is as it sounds, but the nature of the work depends on the environment you are working in. Bricklayers can work on a freelance basis, moving from job to job to where they have heard there is work. This is less steady work, but it does mean that you have the freedom of being in charge of where you choose to work and for how long (in theory).
You can even advertise your services through the internet or in local media and wait for calls to come in. This kind of work could be suited to someone who already has part time work, but would be willing to work for a stint and then allow the work to dry up again. Alternatively, it could be the promotion of oneself as a full-time worker. Working in this manner could mean you do not need to provide or deal with ordering materials, as the employer or individual may have already organised that, and they simply need the labour.
On the other hand, the beginning of ordering materials, advertising one’s services, and dealing with a clientele sets you in good stead for what is practically a self-run business,
and this is where many people in the trade industry desire to be. The trade industry is an opportunity for self-employment, and the attraction of that can be the catalyst that someone needs to drive them towards setting up their own business. This, of course, means that you will need to think as a business-owner as well as a labourer, and will have to balance account sheets (short courses are available for people to learn how to do this effectively) and market the business to prospective customers.
This is a general rule for most trade jobs, the options are to be a freelance plumber, carpenter, electrician, bricklayer etc. working for individuals or larger companies on one’s own terms, to set up one’s own business, or to seek employment with a company where work can be slightly more constrained, but also more steady and without the requirement of dealing with other aspects of running a business.

As well as this, there is always the opportunity to be promoted from an entry-level construction worker, to a foreman, or to become involved in the actual running of the business. As with any job, once one is in a company, keeping oneself alert to possible opportunities in other kinds of work is a key way to gain higher paid employment with more responsibility (if that is one’s desire).
